Some Druid builds only reveal their identity after the right Unique weapon drops. Greatstaff of the Crone is one of those items, turning Claw from a routine resource tool into a meaningful part of the damage plan. Players comparing Diablo 4 gear should view this staff as a complete playstyle choice, not an isolated upgrade, because its value depends on attack speed, close-range survival, and reliable resource flow.

The weapon guarantees Weapon Damage and ranks to Claw, while its enhanced damage effect gives repeated basic attacks enough weight to remain relevant against elites. That changes the question from "What skill spends my resource?" to "How can every Claw sequence prepare my next high-value attack?"

Why Claw Becomes the Build's Engine

Greatstaff of the Crone rewards a Druid who stays active rather than waiting for a single large cooldown. Each swing can build resource, create Lucky Hit opportunities, and maintain pressure while other abilities recover. The result feels less like a two-button rotation and more like a continuous combat loop.

Attack Speed is especially important here. Faster Claw usage means more resource gained over a short window, more chances for supporting effects to occur, and less time standing idle between major attacks. A modest increase can therefore improve the entire rhythm of the character instead of merely raising the number shown on the character sheet.

Do not empty your resource immediately after reaching a comfortable amount. Keep enough available to cast your secondary damage skill when an elite becomes vulnerable, enters a stagger window, or moves into a favorable position.

Building Around Melee Uptime

This setup is strongest when the Druid can remain beside enemies without constant retreating. Armor, resistances, maximum Life, damage reduction, and dependable defensive cooldowns all contribute to practical damage because they allow more uninterrupted Claw attacks.

Positioning matters just as much as defensive stats. Against ordinary packs, approach from an angle that keeps several targets within reach without placing your character in the center of every hazard. Against elites, fight close enough to maintain pressure while leaving a clear path for disengagement.

Secure survival and resource stability before chasing small offensive improvements.
Test attack speed in actual encounters rather than judging it from the menu alone.
Save major defensive effects for dangerous elite patterns and boss damage windows.

Rotation, Powershifting, and Boss Timing

Powershifting can connect the Claw phase with a stronger damage window. Instead of changing forms without a reason, use the transition when it activates a useful bonus or lines up with your secondary skill. A practical sequence is Claw pressure, form change, concentrated damage, then a return to Claw for recovery.

Boss fights expose weak resource planning quickly. Build resource before the boss presents an opening, activate the relevant defense, and avoid spending everything on minor targets during the approach. When the boss commits to a long animation, remain in range and complete the cycle; when a lethal mechanic begins, leave early and return as soon as the danger passes.

Many players lose more damage by chasing perfect positioning than by using a slightly imperfect rotation. Consistent contact during safe moments is usually worth more than forcing one extra attack into a hazardous animation.

Who Should Use This Weapon?

Greatstaff of the Crone suits players who enjoy close combat, frequent basic attacks, and a rotation with few empty moments. It also works well for farming when enemies arrive in dense groups, since Claw can maintain momentum while resource and cooldowns recover naturally.

It is less attractive for Druids built around distant Nature Magic skills or abilities that rarely benefit from melee contact. For those characters, the investment in Claw ranks, attack speed, and defensive uptime may weaken the rest of the build instead of improving it.

Before spending rare materials on upgrades, test the staff in your preferred endgame activities and measure how often you can attack safely. If your setup needs cheap Diablo 4 materials for that testing process, plan purchases around the final version of the build rather than temporary gear swaps.
