Grim Pillars Spell Totem Oracle has quickly become one of the more interesting builds in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5. Instead of standing still and repeatedly casting spells, you place totems, keep moving, and let Grim Pillars handle most of the damage. This playstyle works especially well in crowded Ritual encounters, where positioning is often more important than raw damage. If you are planning your first character for the Forbidden Rites league, POE 2 Orbs can also help fill temporary gear or currency gaps during progression.
How Grim Pillars Spell Totem Works
The basic setup is simple:
• Link Grim Pillars with Spell Totem.
• Use the totems to deploy pillars while you move around.
• Invest in Spirit to support your totem setup.
• Improve area coverage and placement speed with support gems.
• Use curses and utility skills to increase damage against tougher enemies.
The biggest advantage is uptime. Your character does not need to remain directly beside enemies, so you can drop several totems, move away, and let them continue attacking. This makes the build comfortable for both map clearing and dangerous Ritual arenas.
Ancestral Bond and Spirit Requirements
Ancestral Bond is one of the important passive choices for this setup. Once the build starts relying heavily on Spell Totems, Spirit becomes a major gearing concern.
When planning upgrades, look for Spirit on available equipment, especially your scepter, body armour, and amulet. Having enough Spirit before switching can make the difference between a smooth transition and a build that feels incomplete.
If you are missing several early upgrades, buy cheap Path of Exile 2 Orbs can be used to speed up the gearing process, although the build should still be playable with ordinary league-start equipment.
Leveling Before Grim Pillars
Do not try to force Grim Pillars from the beginning. The skill becomes realistically accessible later in the campaign, with Verisium Remnants appearing from Act 4.
For Acts 1–3, a chaos-based Oracle setup is a much easier route. A common approach is:
1. Start with Essence Drain + Contagion.
2. Pick up life and resistance nodes while leveling.
3. Ascend into Oracle and take useful early defensive options.
4. Continue using the temporary setup until Grim Pillars becomes available.
5. Respec the necessary passive points once the totem gear is ready.
This approach is less flashy, but it saves a lot of frustration. Players can also search for cheap POE 2 Orbs when looking for inexpensive leveling upgrades.
Grim Pillars Bossing Setup
Once the core build is running, damage can scale through mana, Spirit, and spell modifiers. Archmage is particularly attractive for a mana-stacking version because a larger mana pool can contribute to offensive scaling.
For defense, Eldritch Battery and Mind Over Matter can form an effective combination, allowing mana investment to serve both offensive and defensive purposes.
For tougher bosses, consider adding:
• Elemental Weakness for resistance reduction.
• Frost Bomb for additional elemental resistance pressure.
• Entangle or other utility skills depending on your final setup.
• Area and totem-speed supports for smoother clearing.
Is Grim Pillars Oracle Worth Playing?
Yes, especially if you like builds that reward good positioning rather than constant button pressing. The main drawback is the delayed power spike: Grim Pillars is not a level-one starter, so you need a temporary campaign setup before the build comes together.
Once the Act 4 transition is complete, however, the playstyle becomes much more rewarding. You can control space with totems, kite dangerous enemies, and maintain steady damage without standing directly in harm's way. For players looking to push Rituals and the Atlas, POE 2 Orbs for sale can also provide another way to fill specific gearing gaps while the character moves toward its final version.
