Electric bikes are designed to provide a smooth, comfortable, and relatively quiet riding experience. However, after riding your ebike for a while, you might notice unusual sounds such as clicking, squeaking, grinding, rattling, or humming.
Some noises are completely normal, especially those coming from the electric motor. Others may indicate loose components, worn parts, or mechanical problems that need attention.
If your ebike has recently started making strange sounds, here are nine common reasons and what you can do about them.
1. Loose Bolts or ComponentsOne of the most common causes of unusual ebike noises is loose hardware.
Electric bikes experience constant vibrations, especially when riding on rough roads, gravel, or uneven trails. Over time, these vibrations can loosen bolts and other components.
Common symptoms:
  • Rattling sounds when riding over bumps
  • Clicking noises from the frame
  • Vibrations around the handlebars or rear rack

How to fix it:
Inspect the bolts around the handlebars, seat, pedals, fenders, and rear rack. Tighten loose fasteners according to the manufacturer's torque specifications.
Avoid overtightening bolts because this can damage threads or components.
2. Worn or Dirty Brake PadsIf your ebike makes squeaking or grinding sounds when braking, the problem may come from the brake system.
Disc brakes can become noisy when the brake pads are contaminated with oil, dirt, or moisture. Worn brake pads can also produce unpleasant grinding sounds.
Common symptoms:
  • High-pitched squeaking when braking
  • Grinding sounds near the wheels
  • Reduced braking performance

How to fix it:
Inspect the brake pads and rotors for wear or contamination. Clean the rotors with an appropriate disc brake cleaner and replace worn or contaminated pads when necessary.
If you hear metal-on-metal grinding, stop riding until the brakes have been inspected.
3. A Dry or Poorly Lubricated ChainYour ebike chain needs regular lubrication to operate smoothly.
Without proper maintenance, the chain can become dry, dirty, or rusty, causing clicking, squeaking, or grinding sounds while pedaling.
Common symptoms:
  • Squeaking during pedaling
  • Rough gear changes
  • Grinding noises from the drivetrain

How to fix it:
Clean the chain using a bicycle-compatible degreaser, allow it to dry, and apply suitable chain lubricant.
Wipe away excess lubricant to prevent dirt buildup.
Regular chain maintenance is especially important for riders who frequently travel on dusty trails or wet roads.
4. Motor Noise or Internal WearElectric motors naturally produce some noise during operation.
A gentle humming or whirring sound is usually normal, particularly when accelerating or climbing hills.
However, sudden grinding, knocking, or unusually loud buzzing may indicate a motor-related problem.
Common symptoms:
  • Loud grinding during acceleration
  • Unusual vibrations from the motor
  • Motor noise that becomes progressively louder

How to fix it:
First, determine whether the sound occurs only when motor assistance is active.
If the noise is new or significantly louder than normal, contact the manufacturer or a qualified ebike technician.
Avoid opening the motor yourself, especially if your ebike is still under warranty.
For riders looking for a comfortable electric bike, the Himiway D5 2.0 is worth considering. Its 750W motor delivers up to 90 Nm of torque, providing strong assistance for hills and everyday riding. Its full-suspension design also helps absorb bumps on uneven surfaces.
Although suspension cannot eliminate mechanical noises, a properly maintained full-suspension ebike can provide a smoother riding experience.
5. Loose or Damaged SpokesYour wheels contain multiple spokes that maintain proper tension and help support the bike's weight.
When spokes become loose or damaged, they can produce clicking or pinging sounds while riding.
Common symptoms:
  • Clicking noises from the wheels
  • Wheels that appear slightly bent or uneven
  • Unusual sounds when turning

How to fix it:
Inspect the wheels for broken or noticeably loose spokes.
If you discover uneven spoke tension or wheel wobbling, have a bicycle mechanic inspect and true the wheel.
6. Worn Pedals or Bottom BracketIf you hear clicking or creaking every time you pedal, the problem may come from the pedals, crank arms, or bottom bracket.
These components experience repeated pressure during every ride.
Common symptoms:
  • Clicking with each pedal rotation
  • Creaking when pedaling uphill
  • Side-to-side movement in the crank

How to fix it:
Check whether the pedals and crank arms are properly secured.
If the noise continues, the bottom bracket bearings may need professional inspection or replacement.
7. Suspension Components Need MaintenanceMany electric bikes feature front suspension, rear suspension, or both.
Suspension systems improve comfort, but worn bushings, loose mounting hardware, or poorly maintained components can create unwanted sounds.
Common symptoms:
  • Creaking when riding over bumps
  • Knocking from the front fork
  • Clicking when the suspension compresses

How to fix it:
Inspect the suspension mounting points and follow the manufacturer's maintenance recommendations.
For example, the Himiway D5 2.0 full-suspension models are designed to improve comfort on uneven terrain. However, like other suspension-equipped ebikes, they still require periodic inspection and maintenance.
8. Loose Battery or AccessoriesSometimes, unusual noises have nothing to do with the motor or drivetrain.
A loose battery, fender, kickstand, or rear rack can produce rattling sounds during riding.
This is especially worth checking if you frequently carry groceries, commuting equipment, or other accessories.
The same applies to a 2 seater electric bike, where passenger seats, footrests, and additional mounting hardware may introduce more potential sources of rattling.
How to fix it:
Check that the battery is correctly seated and locked into position.
Inspect accessories and mounting hardware for movement.
Never modify battery mounts or electrical connectors to eliminate rattling.
9. Tire or Wheel Bearing ProblemsUnusual noises may also come from damaged tires or worn wheel bearings.
Wheel bearings allow the wheels to rotate smoothly. When they wear out, they may produce grinding, rumbling, or clicking sounds.
Common symptoms:
  • Grinding sounds while coasting
  • Rough wheel rotation
  • Side-to-side movement in the wheel
  • Repeated clicking caused by debris in the tire

How to fix it:
Inspect the tires for embedded stones, glass, or other debris.
Check whether the wheels rotate smoothly and whether there is noticeable bearing play.
If you suspect bearing damage, have the wheel inspected before continuing to ride.
